More or less since Gutenberg, the media was the message: Pamphleteers, journalists, marketers, and governments controlled the reins of information and decided what news and knowledge to share, when. Then came the Internet, social media, and smartphones, turning the formerly passive abstraction known as the audience into a vibrant throng of bloggers, tweeters, and likers. Now, the old media hegemony is rethinking its role, learning how to engage communities as co-creators and collaborators, and connecting content to action. The result: Better information, heightened citizenship, and a stronger society.
